“Write the vision. Make it clear on tablets so that anyone can read it quickly. Habakkuk 2:2
Do you have a vision board- a place where you can put images and words that show the things you want to do, be, or have in your life? What are the benefits of a vision board?
I’ve been going through the Vision Board Course created by Terri Savelle Foy and reading the book, “Dream it. Pin it. Live it: Make Vision Boards Work For You” that comes with it. Even though I’ve heard about the importance of having a vision board many times before, it’s still inspiring to go through the course.
I first heard about creating a vision board at a women’s ministry event in the early 2000s. Back then, our only options seemed to be to go through stacks of magazines and hopefully find some images or words that represented our goals and dreams and then cut them out. So that’s what we did.
Armed with scissors and an assortment of magazines, we congregated and started looking through the magazines for any images that spoke to us. After cutting them out, we’d put them in a folder and take them home to add to our vision board or faith planner.
Our options have certainly grown. Not only can we find images online to save to a folder on our desktop but we can also ask the help of a graphic designer and now there are also AI image generators that will create whatever you ask them to. Truly I can’t think of any good reason not to have either an online or offline vision board. What do you think? Here are some of the benefits of having a vision board:
Clear Goals: It helps you see and remember your goals. Having a picture of something you want, like a place you want to visit or a job you want to have, it helps you stay focused on what you want. It’s a visual reminder of your dreams. When you see this board every day, it’s like a friendly reminder from your aspirations. Like having a map that guides you toward your dreams.
Motivation: Looking at your vision board is like getting a daily dose of inspiration. When you see those images of your dream house, the ideal job, or that tropical vacation spot, it stirs up excitement and determination within you. It serves as a reminder of why you’re putting in the effort and encourages you to keep moving forward, even when challenges arise.
Positive Thinking: Your vision board shows positive things you want in your life. When you look at it, it can make you feel happier and more positive about the future. When you focus on the images and words representing your goals and desires on your vision board, it serves as a reminder of what you’re working towards. It triggers your brain to think about the possibilities and opportunities associated with your goals.
Planning: It’s like a roadmap for your dreams. You can break down big goals into smaller steps and add those steps to your board. You’ll be able to see the path to your goal more clearly. This makes your goals feel more achievable because you’re not just staring at a distant destination; you have a clear plan on how to get there. For example, if your dream is to become a successful writer, your vision board can include smaller goals like writing a certain number of pages each day, attending writing workshops, or submitting your work to publishers. This will help you track your progress and stay motivated.
Visualization: When you look at your vision board, you imagine yourself reaching those goals. This can actually help your brain think that these goals are possible, making you more likely to work towards them. A vision board is like a picture book of your dreams and goals. You start to picture yourself achieving those goals. It’s like making a mental movie in your head. This mental movie can convince your brain that these goals are doable. When this happens, you’ll be motivated to take the actions to make it happen.
Focus: More benefits of a vision board is that it reminds you of what’s most important to you. It’s easy to get distracted, but the board keeps your attention on your dreams. It reinforces your commitment and determination and increases your chances of achieving what you desire.
Tracking Progress: As you achieve things on your vision board, you can mark them off or replace them with new goals. This shows you how far you’ve come and what you’ve accomplished.
