Pros and Cons of Starting a Blog
Starting a blog is easy, but it’s not so easy to stick with it week after week. There were over 600 million blogs in the world at the end of 2018. Of those, 30% were abandoned after just one month, and 60% were inactive by the end of the year. So even though it’s highly advisable to have a blog to help market your business or organization, first learn about the pros and cons of starting a blog to make sure you don’t become a part of these statistics.
Here are a few important pros and cons (of starting a blog) to think about:
Pro: You Can Make Money from Home
There are many advantages to starting a money-making blog, one of which is that you can work from anywhere. You don’t need to commute or find a quiet place to work; you only need a laptop and an internet connection. Plus, if you’re motivated, you can make a lot of money blogging!
Con: It Takes Time to Build Up Traffic
One of the biggest cons of starting a money-making blog is that it can take time to build up enough traffic to make any significant income. It can take months or even years to attract a large enough audience to your blog to make a full-time income. This doesn’t mean you won’t make any money in the meantime. You can still generate some income from advertising and affiliate marketing even with a small amount of traffic. And as your blog expands and grows its audience, your earnings will reflect that. Just be prepared for it to take some time to get there.
Pro: You Don’t Need Any Technical Expertise
A big pro of starting a money-making blog is that you don’t need any technical expertise. You don’t need any code or website design skills. Several easy-to-use blogging platforms like WordPress and Blogger make it easy to start. All you need to do is choose a platform, sign up for an account, and start writing. Don’t forget that it’s entirely possible to customize your blog with themes and plugins to make it look and feel however you want.
Con: It Can Be Competitive
Another potential con of starting a money-making blog is that it can be competitive. With so many blogs already out there, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd. One way to make your blog unique is to focus on a specific niche. This can be something like personal finance, travel, or fashion. When you zero in on one particular topic, you can become an expert in that field. That expertise will help you build a loyal following of readers who are interested in what you have to say.
Pro: You Can Work from Anywhere
One of the biggest reasons people start money-making blogs is that you can work from anywhere in the world. As long as you can find a way to connect to the internet, you can continue earning an income. This ease of entry makes blogging perfect for people who want the freedom to travel or work from home. But, of course, you can also take your laptop with you on vacation and still make money – if you really want to. Many moms and dads who want to stay home with their kids are also finding success.
Con: It Requires Consistent Work
Finally, one of the biggest cons of starting a money-making blog is that it requires consistent work. You must regularly publish new content and promote your blog if you want it to be successful. Blogging to make money is a lot of work, especially in the beginning when you’re trying to build up an audience. However, if you’re committed and willing to put in the effort, it’s possible to make a full-time income from your blog.
As you read through this list of pros and cons of starting a blog, consider how it’ll affect your ability to stay consistent in publishing new content. Take the time to come up with a plan and prepare yourself mentally so that when challenges arise, you’ll be prepared.
I’m Lorene Troyer and I help small businesses and organizations create content in order to gain customers and followers. One of the challenges that I faced and that kept me from starting a blog was the need for a lot of content. Then I discovered PLR (Private Label Rights) content, also referred to as editable content. This was a game changer for me. If creating content is a struggle for you, here are two sources of PLR that I personally use and recommend: Piggy Makes Bank, and Done-For-You Personal Development Content For Coaches, Speakers, Publishers And More.
