How to unlock creativity when you are in a creative rut. You really want (or need) to make some art but every time you get in front of your canvas or work table, nothing happens. You stare out the window, sweep the kitchen, shuffle through your art supplies and look through your art books but nothing inspires you.
There are many reasons why this happens. Stress, fatigue, a cluttered environment, pressure to create good art etc., all of these can play a role in low creativity levels.
One way to stir up your creative juices is to take time to play. Take the pressure off of yourself. Don’t worry about making “good” art. Just focus on having some creative fun. Here are three ideas on how to unlock creativity.
1. Create a miniature piece of art, such as an art card. It’s a good way to be creative without pressure. It does not take nearly as much commitment and time as painting a 10 inch by 12 inch canvas. If you don’t like the way your card turns out, it’s no big loss, you simply get another card and start over.
You can use small bits of material and art supplies left over from other art projects- bits of lace, fabric, ribbon or pieces of textured paper or those odd and ends you’ve saved and were never able to use in your other art.
2. Color a picture. Yes, you heard me. Grab a coloring book and get creative. You can remove the picture from the book and use a glue stick to adhere it to a piece of cardstock, if you like. This will give you a sturdier base to work on. Then you can add texture to the page by gluing on with crumpled up tissue paper in certain areas. Then use crayons, paint, colored pencils to add color. Add shading and highlights. Embellish your picture with glitter, stickers,Washi tape etc.
