“A vacation helps to relieve stress and boredom, gives us a change of scenery, provides us with adventure, and helps to bring us closer to the people in our lives.”
– E. S. Woods
My family and I recently went on a trip to Florida for a fun-filled time at the beach and a visit to Sea World. It was a l-o-n-g trip. I do not like unproductive days so even though I wanted time to play games and talk with my family and enjoy the scenery as we traveled, I also wanted to be able to work in my business. So … I came up with a list of ideas of how to make that happen. Here’s what I came up with.
- Make a list of things to work on ahead of time- that way you know exactly what you’ll be working on, and you won’t waste time trying to remember what it was you were going to do. Some things you can do while traveling are: read books or magazines, write (articles, to-do lists, letters, etc.). You can also brainstorm and come up with new ideas or listen to self-help and educational podcasts and audiobooks (you may want to use noise-canceling headphones).
- Do the things that require the most focus while you are fresh. For me that meant writing and working on my e-book.
- Avoid eating processed carbs and sugary foods that will cause you to feel tired. Since we do a lot of fast foods while we’re traveling, I took a cooler and packed my own foods to snack on- fresh fruits and vegetables, hard-boiled eggs, lunch meats, etc.
- Whenever the “bus” stops, get out and walk around. This will help you stay alert and get more done.
- Save the fun, entertaining stuff for when you are tired. For me, that meant looking at a new mixed media art book I bought specifically for the trip and working on graphic design projects using my laptop.
In summing up my experience with trying to get stuff done while traveling, I have to say, I really did not get that much done. However, it did make the time go faster. The biggest problem was noise and other distractions, plus mental and physical fatigue, which made it hard to focus. The upside is that when I came back, I felt invigorated, and my mind was brimming with new ideas- so all was not lost.
