This post is the the third in the Found Object Art series. I created the dimensional “metallic” word, Jesus, with foam letters. After the letters were glued onto cardboard, I added texturizing medium and spray painted them black. Then I dry brushed them with gold acrylic paint. I added bits of red corrugated cardboard on both sides to repeat the color and texture of the robe in the image.
The area on the right side needed something long and slender- like a stem or twig but how could I make that fit into my theme? I know that you don’t need a reason to place objects in your art, other than they look good, but it’s nice when the objects actually make sense.
Sitting in my craft room, thinking about the situation, I happened to see some artificial cattails my sister gave me the week before and I remembered that there was a scripture associated with Jesus about a bruised reed. I found it in Matthew 12:20, referring to the compassion of Jesus, A bruised reed will He not break.
The cattails ended up being too big, so I used some leaves from an iris flower plant out of my mom’s yard, painting them with a wash of black and red.
The gold piece is made of melted metal. My husband is a welder and as he works, pieces of hot metal fall onto his work area. When they hit the table, they splatter into beautiful designs (at least I think they’re beautiful). The gold metal piece is actually one of these “splatters” that I painted gold.
I used a rubber gasket to cover the bottoms of the stems. I gave it more interest by putting 2 screws and a piece of corrugated cardboard across the middle. It was painted black and dry brushed with gold to give it a metallic look. I added the scripture in the center.
