This is one of my first attempts at creating an art assemblage.
I guess you could call it found object art since a lot of the items I used were things I found. For example the 3 bullet casings were found on one of my excursions as were the 5 stones, the wood and the rusted metal.
I struggled with the background, and started out by covering my canvas with a mixture of gesso and dark brown paint. I finally settled on covering the background with some black screening material. It gave it a better texture and looked more cohesive.
The round shield on the bottom left was made by hammering a tuna can lid. The design glued in the middle was made using playdough (not a wise choice for longevity) and a round stamp design. I painted everything silver and then dry brushed it with black acrylic paint. The nail heads around the outside were created by making dots with black and white acrylic paint.
The metal black case where I put David, used to house an old reflector (I rescued it from the trash- what was my husband thinking?!!). I took it apart and spray painted it black.
Below the image of David, are 3 rusty washers on some burlap. The washers were rusted by using hydrogen peroxide and table salt. I thought the rusty items looked too drab. I wanted to bring out some of the orange in David’s apparel, so I dabbed some bright orange nail polish on the rusty parts. Who knew!?
