Do you have a big goal for the new year?
With the new year just around the corner, it’s a good time to ponder our aspirations for the upcoming months. The busyness of Christmas will be over and we’ll be filled with good intentions to lose weight, pay off debts, get fit, drink less alcohol, and be
nicer to the grumpy neighbor who lives beside us. Sound familiar? Then read on!
The truth is that most of us set ourselves up for failure when it comes to New Years’ Resolutions because a) our lists are too long, and b) they’re simply not exciting enough!
How about ditching your New Year’s Resolutions? Not only is it a liberating feeling, but you’ll also avoid the massive guilt trip that comes from setting them, starting them, slipping up on them, and then stopping them all in the space of two weeks!
Instead, why not focus on one big ambition for the year? All you need to do is set one big goal that really excites you and challenges you, one that would feel like a major achievement (if not a life-changing moment) once you’ve done it.
Maybe you’ve always dreamed of snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands or writing a book on how to connect with people online or going on an overseas mission trip. Or maybe you’ve had a deep yearning to start your own business, or to completely change your career. Put a stake in the ground and make this upcoming year the year you actually make it happen.
Here is a plan for setting your one big goal for the new year.
STEP 1: MAKE IT EXCITING
Your one big goal needs to get you excited when you think about it. Spend a few hours in early January doing some soul-searching. Reflect upon what’s missing in your life and what’s truly important to you. Then pick one big goal that feels really exhilarating and scary at the same time. Write this down on a Post-It note and put it where you can see it every day.
STEP 2: COME UP WITH YOUR ACTION PLAN
Big goals can be overwhelming so break it into smaller parts.. Start by looking at your current situation and then imagine what your life would look like after you reached your big goal for the new year. Write down the gaps between where you are today and where you want to be, and then draw up your action plan. Finally, put some checks in place to review your progress over the coming months.
STEP 3: GET (AND STAY) EXCITED ABOUT THE RESULT.
To overcome the challenges, setbacks, and disappointments you’ll face along your way, focus on the results you’ll gain from reaching your goal. Build a clear and compelling picture in your mind of what you’ll feel, sense, see, and believe once your goal has been achieved. Close your eyes and picture yourself in front of your new house, or sitting in your office at home working for yourself… Driving your new car, planning that luxury holiday you’ve always wanted… and enjoying the financial freedom that your new home-based online business has given you.
STEP 4: TAKE SMALL STEPS EVERY DAY
In the words of St Francis of Assisi, Start by doing what’s necessary and then what’s possible, and very soon you’re doing the impossible. Taking small daily actions is easy and very soon they’ll accumulate into big shifts.
The first small step may be to cut down on television or social media so you’ll have more time to work on your goal- for example, you could use this time to read books or take classes to help you learn what you need to do or talk to people who’ve already accomplished what you want to achieve. As you work towards your goal for the new year, the goal might change a bit, but as long as the desired results remain clear, you have a good chance of reaching your big goal for the new year.
