There are many different types of mixed media art (art that uses a variety of materials). It’s not limited to a canvas or art that consists of paint layers, pieces of paper and other items.
A popular type of mixed media is scrapbooking which according to *Wikipedia.com, “is a method, an art for preserving, presenting, arranging personal and family history in the form of a book, box, card. Typical memorabilia include photographs, printed media, and artwork. Scrapbook albums are often decorated and frequently contain extensive journaling.”
When I was growing up, the community I lived in would often create scrapbooks for people who were ill. Each family in the community would decorate one sheet and then all the sheets would be placed in the book and presented to the person who was ill as a way to help them pass the time. The pages were decorated with drawings, images, doilies, greeting cards, quotes etc.
Found object art contains items that are “found” and it often falls in the category of mixed media. Some examples might be, a painting that uses egg shells for texture or a piece of bark that has been painted or weeds from the yard glued to a traditional piece of art.
Assemblage art can also be one of the different types of mixed media. I still have not figured ot the difference between a “low” assemblage and a collage that uses dimensional objects but in the Wikipedia definition it states that assemblage has three-dimensional elements projecting out of the base.
The definition found at **Dictionary.com for art assemblage is, “a sculptural technique of organizing or composing into a unified whole a group of unrelated and often fragmentary or discarded objects.”
Collage is another popular technique that often uses mixed media. Collage comes from the French word coller which means “to glue.” It’s a very simple idea- you “stick” material to a surface. The materials can be anything that you are able to glue to your base. The art card shown below is an example of collage, because everything is adhered with glue.
Another one of the different types of mixed media art is sculpture. According to the ***Merriam-Webster dictionary, one meaning of sculpture is “the action or art of processing (as by carving, modeling, or welding) plastic or hard materials into works of art.” If another technique would be used to enbellish the sculpture, it would all under the heading of mixed media.
So there you have it, a (somewhat limited) list of the different types of mixed media art. There are many others. If you have some additional ideas, leave a comment and share your thoughts.
